Pre-Sessional English

Overview of Pre-Sessional English course in London

Our Foundation and Pre-Masters programmes include modules designed to improve students’ English language ability and academic study skills. However, for students who do not fully meet the required English language level, or who would like to build greater confidence before beginning their main programme in the UK, we offer Pre-Sessional English courses lasting 8 or 12 weeks.

These courses help students strengthen their language skills and prepare for the academic and communication demands of studying in a UK educational environment.

Duration – 8 to 12 Weeks

Intakes – September and January

Course Content

The Pre-Sessional course focuses on developing students’ language skills in the four key areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Teaching is delivered in small groups, and each student is assigned a personal tutor who meets with them at least once a week to review progress and provide guidance.

Students learn a range of language techniques, including:

  • Improving grammar and language accuracy
  • Expanding general and specialised vocabulary
  • Strengthening sentence and paragraph structure
  • Developing reading skills and identifying key information and arguments
  • Interpreting tables and graphs
  • Practising multiple-choice question techniques
  • Speaking in a clear, coherent, and logical way

The programme also introduces important study skills that will be useful when beginning the main academic course, such as:

  • Taking notes during lectures
  • Writing summaries
  • Producing extended pieces of academic writing
  • Delivering presentations

In addition to academic preparation, the course helps students adapt to life in the UK. Students learn about British culture, explore places to visit in London, and understand how to make effective use of public transport. It also provides an opportunity to meet and build friendships with other students before the main programme begins.

The course encourages students to become independent learners. Weekly one-to-one tutorials allow students to reflect on their strengths and areas for improvement while receiving personalised feedback from their tutor.

Students study 23 hours per week on the Pre-Sessional programme and are expected to complete daily homework assignments. The dedication students bring to improving their English is matched by the commitment of our teachers to prepare them thoroughly for future studies in the UK.
